The best thing about photography is there is no cap to growth. Technology development is accelerating and creativity is limitless. Hi, My name is Mercy Mumoh; a Kenyan Female Photojournalist. I am the founder and CEO of Mumoh Photography, a company that offers both commercial photography and photojournalism photography. I started my journey as a Photojournalist four years ago at Radio Africa Group until the end of April, 2022. I resigned due to work related issues. I am a graduate of Daystar University with a degree in communication. I started photography as a hobby. I have never been in a photography class. I learned photography through YouTube. I was able to perfect my skill when I started doing it professionally. At first I felt it was a “men thing” back then there were only a few females doing it. I never imagined myself being a photographer or photojournalist because some of my school mates or colleagues made fun of me or mocked me re: fact that I was a lady, doing a "man" job.
What were the biggest initial hurdles and how did you overcome them? Professionally the journey has not been easy, especially the fact that I am a woman doing a "man's job" as people might say and doing it way better! My biggest challenge has always been about my gender, hence I ended up missing out on unique opportunities. However, I am still grateful, hardworking and never giving up working in this space.
What advice would you give to an upcoming youth or talents locally and internationally? Never give up. One of my favorite parts about photography is the people I meet, along with the opportunities I stumble upon. I hope one day you can create a platform that can be used as a tool for raising awareness. My advice to anyone working in photography is always practice, learn, experiment and improve. Always innovate. Always create!
