Hon. Marci Ien, a prominent Canadian figure, has seamlessly transitioned from a distinguished career in journalism to becoming a Member of Parliament and the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth. Born in Toronto's St. James Town neighborhood, Marci is a Black Canadian of Trinidadian descent, bringing a unique perspective to her roles. Marci's journey began at CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario, where she worked as a news writer and general assignment reporter after graduating with a degree in Radio and Television Arts from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute in 1991. She quickly made her mark, reporting from Queen's Park in Toronto and covering major stories, including the crash of Swissair Flight 111 off Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia.
In 1997, Marci joined CTV as a reporter for CTV Atlantic, showcasing her versatility. She later anchored CTV Newsnet and, from 2003, co-hosted the nationwide Canada AM morning broadcast show until its cancellation in 2016. Marci's excellence in journalism earned her accolades, including a Radio Television Digital News Association Award, a Harry Jerome Award, and a Canadian Screen Award nomination.
In a surprising yet commendable move, Marci entered politics. In 2020, she became the Liberal Party of Canada's candidate in Toronto Centre for a by-election, ultimately winning and defeating the leader of the Green Party of Canada, Annamie Paul. This victory marked the beginning of her political career, and she was re-elected in 2021 with increased support.
Marci's dedication to public service was further acknowledged when she was appointed as the Minister for Women, Gender Equality and Youth on October 26, 2021. In this role, she brings her passion for equality, youth empowerment, and community development to the forefront of Canadian policymaking.
Beyond her professional life, Marci is a published author, with her 2020 book, "Off Script: Living Out Loud," providing insights into her life growing up in Toronto, her journalism career, and her decision to enter politics. Living in Toronto with her two children, Blaize and Dash, Marci exemplifies the balance between her public and personal life. As Marci continues to serve the people of Toronto Centre, her journey stands as a testament to the possibilities that arise when passion, dedication, and a commitment to positive change intersect in one remarkable individual.
