She wears many hats—a medical doctor, disability activist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of SOFA Foundation, a social venture dedicated to spreading acts of kindness in her local community. Joanna's story is one of unwavering determination and a relentless pursuit of her dreams in the face of adversity. Growing up in the Upper East Region of Ghana, she faced financial struggles and societal barriers due to her physical disability. At the tender age of four, a medical error left her unable to walk, casting doubts on her future prospects.


Despite these challenges, Joanna refused to succumb to despair. Fueled by a burning desire to make a difference, she persevered through hardships and setbacks, holding onto her dream of becoming a medical doctor. Her journey was fraught with obstacles—from financial constraints that threatened her education to societal prejudices that sought to limit her aspirations.


However, Joanna's indomitable spirit and resilience propelled her forward. With sheer determination and the support of her family, she defied expectations and secured a place at the University for Development Studies, School of Medicine, through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program's partnership with CAMFED in Ghana.


Throughout her academic journey, Joanna faced naysayers and skeptics who doubted her abilities. Yet, she remained steadfast in her pursuit, driven by a deep-seated passion to effect change and break down barriers in the medical profession. Despite the challenges she faced, Joanna emerged triumphant, graduating with a degree in internal medicine and embarking on her career as a medical doctor.


Today, Dr. Joanna Gunab is not only a highly accomplished medical professional but also a leading advocate for disability inclusion and empowerment. Through her work with SOFA Foundation, she strives to uplift marginalized communities and inspire individuals living with disabilities to pursue their dreams.


Joanna's impact extends far beyond the confines of her profession.
