Once upon a time, in the bustling tech landscapes of Ghana and beyond, there was an innovative mastermind named David "Kojo" Hutchful. With a heart full of passion for emerging markets and a mind brimming with technological brilliance, David embarked on an extraordinary journey to transform lives through tech. David's adventure began with a solid foundation in education. He earned a BA in Computer Science and Philosophy from Calvin University, followed by a Master’s in Human Computer Interaction from the University of Michigan. His academic prowess set the stage for a career defined by ingenuity and impact. David's professional story took off at Gospel Communications International, where he designed the architecture for BibleGateway.com, an online Bible search tool. This experience fueled his passion for using technology to create meaningful change, leading him to Microsoft Research India. There, he delved into ethnographic research, developing technologies for education and financial services in low-income markets. His work was not only groundbreaking but also deeply rooted in understanding the socio-economic and cultural contexts of these markets.
In 2011, David joined the Grameen Foundation in Ghana, where he spearheaded technology innovations for mHealth, mAgriculture, and Mobile Financial Services. His leadership and vision helped scale up new innovations, bringing technology-driven solutions to the people who needed them most. But David’s quest didn’t stop there.
In 2012, he co-founded engageSPARK, a web-based messaging service designed to extend the reach of social change programs through mobile phones. This platform proved instrumental in delivering a financial literacy program to survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, earning the GSMA’s 2015 Mobile Award for “Best use of mobile in emergency or humanitarian situations.” David's entrepreneurial spirit continued to flourish as he co-founded Bloom Impact, a fintech company democratizing access to working capital for micro and small business owners. His work at Bloom Impact showcased his ability to blend technology with financial empowerment, providing vital resources to underserved communities.
Today, David is the Co-Founder and CTO of Yemaachi Biotech, a trailblazing company using multi-omic, ML-directed target discovery to accelerate precision oncology in Africa and beyond. His innovative approach aims to revolutionize cancer treatment, bringing hope and advanced medical solutions to the continent. In addition to his entrepreneurial ventures, David shares his knowledge as an adjunct faculty member at Ashesi University, teaching Fundamentals of Design & Entrepreneurship and Human-Computer Interaction. His commitment to education and mentorship reflects his belief in the power of knowledge to drive change.
David's story is one of relentless innovation, boundless creativity, and an unwavering dedication to making the world a better place. As he continues to break new ground in tech and biotech, David "Kojo" Hutchful remains a beacon of inspiration, proving that with vision and determination, anything is possible.
