Adumuah Lilian Nortey (LIMELS) | Ghana | Be Authentic!

Entrepreneur | Philanthropist | Fashion Designer/Influencer

Stylist | Wardrobe Planner | Concept Illustrator

My name is Adumuah Lilian Nortey, and I am a Ghanaian entrepreneur, philanthropist, and fashion designer. I am the founder and CEO of Limels Fashion and a member of the Ghana African Trade Advisory Chamber (GATAC) in Accra, Ghana. I grew up in a large family and attended Okuapemman Basic School and Presbyterian College of Education Junior High in Akropong-Akuapem. I later completed my secondary education at Nifa Senior High School. After graduation, I worked as a salesgirl in a supermarket and a boutique in Accra before returning to Akropong-Akuapem to work as an Administrative Assistant at the Akuapem North Community Health Centre. I hold a HND diploma in Fashion Design and Textiles from Koforidua Technical University and am currently pursuing a master's degree in my field.

I started my clothing brand, Limels Fashion, while on campus, selling thrift clothes to lecturers and students. Due to my hard work, consistency, and perseverance, I was awarded the Excellence Student of Fashion Design and Textiles in 2018 at the HIFAS Awards. In 2018, I had the opportunity to explore Dubai and showcase my designs. My entrepreneurial journey did not end on campus. I branded my products to meet international clothing production standards and designed clothes for high-profile personalities such as Portia Gabor, the GJA Journalist of the year 2021.

The name Limels is an acronym for "Lilian Impacting Mankind's Everyday Life with Style." In 2021, we started our philanthropic projects by reaching out to the elderly in our community in the Eastern Region of Ghana. In 2022, we extended our scope to touch lives at the Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital by settling some patients' bills at the children's ward. I also volunteered to teach clothing and textiles to hearing-impaired students at the Senior Technical School for the Deaf in Mampong-Akuapem. We also donated to abandoned elderly women in our community. I possess a selfless trait of helping other people reach their full potential and aspirations. I have executed several projects and initiatives in my community within the Akuapem in the Eastern Region. For example, to reduce unemployment and teenage pregnancy, I enrolled ten girls for free in my fashion institution. I also sponsored the Mr. and Miss Akuapem pageant 2021 for their Dubai trip. As I move forward, I am committed to continuing my work in helping my community and Ghana reach its full potential.

What were the biggest initial hurdles you faced and how did you overcome them?

When I first started my fashion business, gaining the trust and support of my family, friends, and community was a major challenge. Many of them found it difficult to believe that someone my age could achieve what I had set out to do. As a newcomer to the fashion industry, I faced the hurdle of convincing people that I was capable of producing high-quality garments that would satisfy their needs.

To overcome this challenge, I focused on building my brand by working closely with my clients and listening to their concerns. I posted my products on all my social media handles, and I worked to understand and meet their unique perspectives. Additionally, I made sure to be transparent and honest in my communication, which helped to establish trust in my brand. Through hard work and dedication, I was able to gain the support and trust of my community, and my fashion business has continued to thrive ever since.

What advice do you have for young people locally and internationally who are just starting out in their careers or pursuing their passions?

My advice to young people who are embarking on their careers or pursuing their passions is to have faith and hope in their abilities and aspirations. Even when things get difficult, they should persevere and be consistent in their efforts, even on their low days. Seeking guidance and mentorship from experienced individuals in their field of interest is also essential, as it can provide them with valuable insights and knowledge.

It's also important to network and build relationships, as it can open up opportunities and provide support when needed. Being authentic and true to oneself is crucial, and one should always strive to learn, grow, and adapt to new situations and challenges. Staying focused on their goals, but also being flexible and open to new opportunities and experiences, can help them make the most out of their career paths.

Finally, I would advise them to never give up on their dreams and to always work hard towards achieving their goals. While it's important to strive for success, they should also find contentment in their journey and accomplishments along the way. With God and faith by their side, they can overcome any obstacle and reach their full potential.
