Deepti Prasad | India | Setting GOALS!!

I hail from a business family. As a kid, I used to help manage and grow my family business. After my college, I chose to work with an early stage startup, which further exposed me to the nitty-gritty workings and challenges of the start-up world. The 'when' actually happened when I had to organize a family function in early 2015. That’s when I realized how exhaustive and overwhelming this entire event planning process could be, for any newbie like me who had little context and time. Internet is full of help, vendor suggestions, articles but none actually helped in zeroing down on the right set of recommended vendors for my requirement. Organizing few more events for friends and family introduced me to the challenges of doing it in efficient manner. So, we started experimenting with the idea of building a curated set of service providers offering best of services and prices.

Eventila was born sheer out of passion to bring innovation and technology in this otherwise unorganized industry in India. Hailing from Economics background, I have fair sense of customer preferences. My experience in consulting further equips me to understand the gap in this industry. Weddings in India are a big deal and there are many online players catering to that segment. However, there are no structured players in the social and corporate event segment. We want to make ant celebration planning simpler - be it the Birthday Celebration of loved ones, Corporate Functions, Social Outings or the Big Indian weddings.

What were the biggest initial hurdles to building your business and how did you overcome them?

-Most online portals have instilled a wrong attitude among customers by offering discounts to acquire new customers in India. So acquiring real customers without offering a discount is a challenge.

-We have tried to overcome this issue by giving our 100 per cent to every customer inquiry we get. We showcase the value we bring to our customers and vendors and that’s the reason why we have been able to create some happy repeat customers for ourselves.

Did you ever deal with contention from your family and friends concerning your entrepreneurial pursuits? How did you handle it? What would you do differently in hindsight?

My startup and my kiddo happened almost at the same time. So it is to this day, little difficult managing both the babies, which demand equal time and energy. Thankfully, I have a supportive mom and family, who have always shown trust in me for pursuing my dreams.

What would you say was the single most influential factor in your business success?

I am always willing to listen and learn good things from others. I always accept my shortcomings but never fail to stop believing in myself and my dreams.

What do you know today that you wish you would have known when you first got started as an entrepreneur?

Goal setting is very important for achieving results. In a start-up there will always be thousand of things to do. One needs to learn to prioritize and execute the most important 2-3 key tasks which will bring 80% of the result.

What advice would you give to an upcoming young and old entrepreneur locally and internationally? Be persistent. When you do something do with your full conviction. Be razor focused to bring real value to the customers by iterating and improving continuously. As long as you enjoy the journey and have vision for long term, things would fall in place. Startups are hard but fun.
