In the bustling world of gastronomy, Chef Tracy Chang stands out as a beacon of innovation and community spirit. From her vibrant restaurant, PAGU, in Cambridge, MA, to her impactful social initiatives, Tracy's journey is as inspiring as it is exciting. As the co-founder of Roundtable, Tracy has created a hub for change, uniting chefs, educators, activists, and community members to spark local transformation. Based in Cambridge, but with a mission that stretches across the nation, Roundtable is all about driving impactful change in neighborhoods, with events that could very well be just around the corner from you. Tracy’s culinary career is a tapestry of diverse and remarkable experiences. At PAGU, her Spanish-Japanese tapas restaurant, she’s built a haven for both food lovers and a dedicated team, many of whom come from immigrant backgrounds. PAGU, a James Beard Foundation-nominated gem, isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a vibrant community space that thrives on innovation and inclusivity.
But Tracy’s impact extends far beyond the kitchen. When the pandemic struck, she co-founded Off Their Plate, an initiative designed to tackle two pressing issues: feeding frontline workers and supporting struggling restaurant employees. Joining forces with Ken Oringer and Natalie Guo, Tracy mobilized resources to provide nutritious meals to hospitals and empower immigrant families struggling with food insecurity. This initiative also worked to restore livelihoods, creating a lifeline for those affected by the pandemic’s economic toll.
Not stopping there, Tracy launched Project Restore Us, aiming to refine and expand the model of support initiated by Off Their Plate. Sponsored by CommonWealth Kitchen, this project is focused on scaling efforts to support BIPOC restaurants and enhance community food access. Tracy’s commitment to social justice and community development shines through every project she touches.
Tracy Chang’s dedication to transforming society through gastronomy has not gone unnoticed. Her remarkable efforts have earned her a special recognition as one of the top chefs making a significant difference. With every dish she creates and every initiative she leads, Tracy continues to blend culinary excellence with a passion for positive change. Her story is a testament to the power of food and community to drive real, impactful transformation.
