Ruthabel Mensah | Ghana | Never Settle

Entrepreneur | Youtuber | Marketing Consultant

Creativity is often defined as the ability to come up with new and useful ideas. Creative minded individuals often like to daydream and imagine the possibilities. They can immerse themselves in imagination yet remain grounded enough to turn their daydreams into reality. I would say, this is my world - hahaha.

My name is Ruthabel Mensah, and I am CREATIVE. My journey started after tertiary school, getting a job was becoming a struggle. I always knew I wanted to study Marketing, because I enjoyed selling and I knew it would help me, that's how I started my freelance social media marketing, Aside from the traditional marketing I realized now social media marketing is a thing now and people are going towards that. I help businesses with their marketing strategies, how to price products amongst other things but I know being an entrepreneur is my life and I enjoy doing and teaching others. Personally I'm very creative and naturally very gifted. I'm able to learn very fast, when I see something, I can easily create. So I began my journey as an entrepreneur in the creative industry. I started with balloon decoration, event setup and more, in the beginning I was doing it as a hobby for friends and family and not really charging them (which I guess I still don't ) but I was not filling fulfilled anyway so I wanted to do more. Therefore, I began gathering young ladies in my neighbourhood and began teaching them my skills and this made me happy, so I decided to extend this gesture further so I opened my doors even wider, so now I don't only teach my neighbourhood ladies but anyone and everyone can join my class. Growing up my mum and grandma both dealt in beads and it always caught my attention so up until recently I used to design beaded necklaces and bracelets for them to sell but now I make my own beaded bags, anklets, headbands etc. This is a new venture I'm starting and things are looking good.

What were the biggest initial hurdles and how did you overcome them?

So I will say my biggest hurdle is getting people to trust my brand. I currently don't have a physical store, just online so it's difficult for people to trust you but thank God for good feedback and reviews, this has been a big help to me.

Again getting support from family was an issue as well, it took a lot of convincing for my mum to actually slow down with the pressure of getting a 9am-5pm job, she was just concerned that why go to school and decide to throw that away to be an entrepreneur but I had to insist and tell her I'm not throwing that away my degree in Marketing is actually a big help to me in my business. Also, as much as I was talented there was always a room for improvement and I needed some form of certification for people to trust my work so I joined a few master classes to perfect my craft and talent, because I wanted the best for my business.

What books are you currently reading? Currently I'm reading a novel by Bisi Adjapon 'Of Women and Frogs' and also Liz Curtis High's Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible' and trust me you should read these .

What advice would you give to an upcoming youth or talents locally and internationally?

What I will tell the youth or other talented individuals is that every journey begins with a step, don't let anything or anyone discourage you from doing what you love. Always remember that learning doesn't ever end. There is always room for improvement so never settle, always thrive for more, aspire to become a better version of you always. And lastly you are the best version of yourself always, you can be whatever you want to be if you set your mind on it, and always remember that consistency, hardwork and determination is the key to success.
