Chef - Gastronomy, Social Change, Community Empowerment
Mariana Aleixo, a powerhouse chef from Rio de Janeiro's Maré community, has been leading a culinary revolution since 2010. As the driving force behind the Maré de Sabores program, she’s woven together a vibrant tapestry of gastronomy, social change, and community empowerment. This initiative is part of Redes da Maré, a larger community movement that fights for the rights of over 140,000 residents across 16 favelas. Through cooking workshops and gastronomic events, Maré de Sabores has become a beacon of hope, offering not just food but opportunities for women in the community. Under Mariana’s leadership, the program runs a buffet that employs local women, offering healthy and affordable meals. When the pandemic hit, Mariana spearheaded an incredible effort, turning Maré de Sabores into a lifeline for the community. She led the charge in food security, managing resources, preparing meals, and ensuring food distribution to those in need. The program also took on the role of a food bank, providing solidarity meals and standing at the forefront of campaigns that raised awareness and provided essential education and social support.
Mariana's impact has been widely recognized. She was chosen as one of 10 chefs celebrated for transforming society through gastronomy—a true testament to her commitment to social change.
Beyond her work in the kitchen, Mariana holds a PhD and a master's degree in Production Engineering from UFRJ, as well as a degree in gastronomy. Her research focuses on uplifting women in Maré, encouraging them to lead the charge in claiming their rights and improving their quality of life.
In 2022, Mariana’s incredible journey was acknowledged on a global scale when she was named to the '50 Next' list, highlighting young leaders shaping the future of gastronomy.
This prestigious recognition, promoted by the World’s 50 Best—often dubbed the Oscars of the culinary world—solidified Mariana's role as a trailblazer who’s not just cooking meals but creating change.
