Kow Abaka Essuman, Esq., stands as a beacon of legal excellence with a career that traverses continents and disciplines, combining legal acumen with a fervent commitment to social impact. His journey from a determined law student to a distinguished international lawyer is nothing short of remarkable. Kow's legal odyssey began at the University of Westminster, where he pursued his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree. During his time there, he made a pivotal decision to become a barrister rather than a solicitor, driven by the desire to diversify a traditionally homogenous field. His ambition led him to the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, a revered institution for barristers, and he furthered his training at BPP Law School, graduating with a Very Competent and earning his place in the Bar of England and Wales in July 2008. The pursuit of knowledge and excellence didn’t stop there. Kow’s quest took him across the Atlantic to Cornell University, an Ivy League institution, where he earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) with honors in International Mergers and Acquisitions and Financial Institutions. Remarkably, he passed the New York Bar Exam on his first attempt—a feat achieved by only a select few foreign candidates—marking the beginning of his esteemed career in New York.

Kow’s early career was characterized by a series of impactful roles. As a Law Intern at the Cornell Legal Aid Clinic, he advocated for indigent clients in New York’s courts, gaining invaluable experience. At Dolphine Solicitors, he represented clients before tribunals, showcasing his legal prowess in high-stakes environments. His time in London, with chambers such as 3 Verulam Buildings and 3 Stone Buildings, provided further depth to his expertise, where he advised on complex commercial cases and procedures.

In 2010, Kow returned to Ghana with a vision to contribute to the burgeoning economic landscape. He joined Reindorf Chambers, a branch of DLA Piper, where he played a key role in corporate and commercial matters, including a major due diligence project for a telecommunications company. His return to Ghana was marked by his admission to the Ghana Bar in October 2011 and his subsequent role at Bentsi-Enchill, Letsa & Ankomah (BELA). At BELA, Kow's reputation soared as he represented high-profile clients, including a billion-dollar hedge fund in a landmark legal battle involving Argentina’s sovereign debt.

Kow’s dedication extends beyond the courtroom. His commitment to legal education is evident through his work with Web Legal Education and the New York Bar Company, where he prepared students for the New York Bar Exam. At Zenith University College in Accra, he lectured on Trust Law, shaping the next generation of legal professionals. Entrepreneurship is another facet of Kow’s multifaceted career.

He founded Express Wash Limited, a laundry service catering to students and the local community, and Optimum Precision International Limited, a tech and media consultancy. His role as an Investment Consultant with LAK Investment Consult highlights his dedication to supporting small and medium enterprises in Ghana.

Kow’s global impact is equally significant. In 2013, he was selected as a Global Shaper by the World Economic Forum and served on the Projects and Fundraising Committee of the Accra Hub. His representation of the Global Shapers Community at the World Economic Forum on Africa in Cape Town in 2015 underscored his commitment to regional development.

His contributions have not gone unnoticed. Kow was featured in the Future of Ghana’s 30 Under 30 Maiden Edition, and his achievements were highlighted on the front page of the Business and Financial Times in a story titled “Smart Suits, Fine Legal Brains.” His media presence includes appearances on ETV Ghana’s Speak Up and Viasat One’s Just The Law, where he shares his insights on legal and socio-political matters.

Kow Abaka Essuman’s story is a testament to the power of determination, intellectual rigor, and a relentless drive to make a difference. His journey from a determined law student to a globally recognized legal expert is an inspiring narrative for young professionals and aspiring leaders. Kow’s legacy continues to inspire and impact the fields of law, education, and entrepreneurship, leaving an indelible mark on both local and global stages.
