Business Owner - Spa Botanica
Harman Dhaliwal's story is one of incredible resilience and unwavering dedication. Born in Ludhiana, India, Harman’s love for natural skincare blossomed early. With a diploma in Esthetics, she opened a thriving spa in Ludhiana, the bustling heart of Punjab. But her journey took an unexpected turn when she faced the challenges of divorce and single motherhood—a situation often stigmatized in her home country. Being a single mother in India wasn’t the best thing, Harman reflects. Faced with societal pressures and the well-being of her daughter, she and her family decided to embark on a new adventure. Sponsored by relatives in Canada, Harman relocated with her daughter in 2010, starting anew with determination and hope. The first year in Winnipeg was tough. Harman and her daughter struggled, relying on food banks and working odd jobs to make ends meet. “The first year was so hard, we barely had food in our fridge,” she recalls. Despite the difficulties, Harman's resilience shone through. Her journey took a pivotal turn when she met Gabrielle, a fellow esthetician, at Strada Personal Spa.
In 2011, Harman and Gabrielle joined forces, opening Spa Botanica in the heart of River Heights. This sanctuary offers a blend of traditional spa treatments and unique Ayurvedic services like Shirodhara and Pinda Swedana. Harman’s extensive knowledge of Ayurvedic skincare, honed over years, is reflected in their bespoke mask recipes and treatments.
Despite their passion and expertise, establishing Spa Botanica wasn’t easy. The business faced near closure in its second year as Harman and Gabrielle struggled to build a client base. Yet, their shared love for Indian spa techniques and Gabrielle’s influence from high-end spas in British Columbia provided the spark they needed.
“We are a boutique-style spa and are very personable,” says Harman. The spa prides itself on its competitive pricing and personal touch. From body wraps and massages to private girl’s nights with local treats, Spa Botanica offers a unique and memorable experience. They even place a Winnipeg Harvest bin near their front desk, a heartfelt nod to the community that supported them during their hardest times.
Today, Spa Botanica is not just a business; it’s a testament to Harman’s indomitable spirit and commitment to her craft. It’s a place where natural beauty and heartfelt service come together, reflecting Harman’s journey from the challenges of her past to the thriving success she enjoys today.
