Photographer | Film Director | Music Videos Strategist
My name is Finnegah Essuman-Mensah. I currently live in Accra, Ghana. I was born and raised in NINA, one of the roughest inner cities in Accra. It's really difficult raising a kid in Nina. But all those obstacles and challenges motivated me to be a better person to sail through. It all started when my parents got divorced and I knew at a very young age (12 years); I would have to start being a man of my own by providing for myself. Therefore, I started selling (merchandising) on the streets of Accra in order to make little money for myself to be able to buy stuff for school. I always dreamed of being a lawyer but I knew the process of me being that would be difficult after my parents got divorced so I decided to think of ways to make a living and I was one day watching tv and I came across music video I saw OWN TV and I told myself I could do this, so I decided to make my research on how to learn about video shooting, directing and editing. I ended up doing my research and I came across a school in Ghana that provided those services so I saved money and also got some from family and friends in order to enrol myself into the school, studied screenwriting and directing for a year and I came out with a diploma and got to do my internship in one of most prestigious companies in Ghana that produce music video and films and rest of was history, I taught myself Photography while I was working in the company.
Fast forward, I still have dreams of studying law but I know I would have to work a little and later enrol myself into a law school to get my degree in law. Keep dreaming - small or big.
What books are you currently reading?
I am currently reading: The Art of Photography and Humans of New York.
What advice would you give to an upcoming youth or talents locally and internationally?
Well my advice I will give young ones coming up is keep pushing, listen, learn and always remember the worst thing someone or anyone can tell you is No. Everything is possible if you put your mind to it.
