Meet Dr. Miriam Mutebi, a groundbreaking force in Kenya’s medical landscape and the first female Breast Cancer Surgeon in the country. With a dynamic blend of expertise and passion, Dr. Mutebi has carved a path as a Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist, dedicated to transforming cancer care across Africa. Her story is one of relentless pursuit, pioneering change, and a commitment to bettering lives through cutting-edge surgery, research, and advocacy. Dr. Mutebi’s journey began with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from the University of Nairobi. She then honed her surgical skills during her residency at Aga Khan University, where she also served as a General Surgery Registrar and instructor, advancing healthcare systems in Kenya. But her ambition didn't stop there. She completed a two-year breast fellowship training at the University of Cape Town, which included a year of breast reconstruction surgery, followed by a prestigious surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Her pursuit of excellence extended into the realm of research, with specialized training in Clinical Epidemiology and Health Systems Research at Weill Cornell University, positioning her as a leading researcher in the fight against cancer. Dr. Mutebi’s impact transcends her surgical expertise. She is a vocal advocate for cancer awareness and early detection, passionately working to improve healthcare systems across Africa. Through her leadership, she is not only shaping the future of cancer care but also inspiring a new generation of healthcare professionals.
Her two-year Fellowship in Breast Surgical Oncology, including a stint in the plastic and reconstruction unit at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, set the stage for her to return to Kenya, where she continues to break new ground. As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Dr. Mutebi’s impact extends far beyond the operating room.
Not content with individual accomplishments, Dr. Mutebi is the President of the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC), where she leads the charge in shaping cancer research and training across the continent. Her leadership also shines through as the Co-Founder of the Pan African Women’s Association of Surgeons (PAWAS), a platform dedicated to empowering female surgeons across Africa.
Dr. Mutebi’s passion for research drives her focus on bridging access gaps in cancer care. As the head of the African Cancer Survivorship Working Group, she’s on a mission to ensure that research reflects patient-reported outcomes and quality of life, while also developing local and regional cancer policies. Her work doesn’t stop there—she’s also committed to training healthcare workers in cancer detection and advocates for improved diagnostic practices.
A true trailblazer, Dr. Miriam Mutebi isn’t just transforming cancer care; she’s creating a ripple effect that will shape the future of healthcare in Africa for generations to come.
