When you think of groundbreaking figures in aviation, Dr. Eng Suaad Al Shamsi’s name rises to the top, not just in the UAE but across the globe. She made history as the first female aircraft engineer in the United Arab Emirates, a monumental achievement in a field traditionally dominated by men. Her journey from a young girl fascinated by airplanes to a leader in aviation is nothing short of inspiring. Al Shamsi’s love for aircraft began early. As a child, she was captivated by the sight of airplanes soaring through the skies. That fascination turned into a passion, and she knew her path was set towards the world of aviation. Encouraged by her mother and supported by the UAE’s leadership, including His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who saw her potential and gave her the opportunity to study abroad, she embarked on a rigorous academic journey. Her educational pursuit began at the University of Hertfordshire, where she earned a degree in Aerospace Engineering in 2006. She then expanded her expertise with a Bachelor’s in Aviation Management from Coventry University in 2010, followed by an MBA in 2012. Always striving for excellence, Al Shamsi also completed an honorary PhD in Aviation/Aerospace Science and Technology in 2019. Her academic prowess is complemented by specialized training with industry leaders such as Messier Bugatti, Honeywell, Airbus, and Boeing, giving her unmatched technical expertise.
In 2007, Al Shamsi made history as the first female licensed aircraft engineer in the UAE, joining Emirates Airlines. She worked in the wheels and brakes workshop, a crucial part of the airline’s operations, ensuring safety and efficiency for one of the world’s leading airlines. Over seven years, she gained extensive experience and recognition, proving her capabilities in a fast-moving, dynamic environment.
Her career took another leap in 2014 when she transitioned into a role as Aircraft Technical Service Engineer, where her expertise in technical troubleshooting and project management shone. By 2016, Al Shamsi was leading major aviation projects as Senior Program Manager in Abu Dhabi, taking charge of large-scale initiatives that shaped the region’s aviation landscape.
In addition to her engineering and leadership roles, Al Shamsi became a powerful advocate for women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). She is a founding member of the UAE Chapter of Women in Aviation International (WAI), where she champions the cause of bringing more women into the industry. Her goal is not only to open doors for other forward-thinking women but also to ensure they have the tools to succeed.
Her accomplishments have earned her numerous accolades. Al Shamsi was recognized by H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed during the Dubai Recruitment Exhibition, and she received the Najm Gold Award for her outstanding contributions to Emirates Group. In Abu Dhabi, she was honored with the Emaratia Shield Privilege and awarded the Fast Track Award from Emirates Airlines. Her influence extended internationally when she represented the UAE at the Shanghai Expo 2010 and served as a jury member in the Star of Science program alongside Dr. Farouk El-Baz, one of NASA’s foremost scientists.
Driven by a passion for mentoring and empowering others, Al Shamsi launched Learn to Live (L2L) in 2018. This consulting and training platform provides aspiring professionals—especially women—with the tools and knowledge to thrive in the aviation sector. Through L2L, she offers lectures, workshops, and guidance, helping to shape the next generation of aviation leaders in the UAE and beyond.
Beyond her professional achievements, Al Shamsi’s commitment to personal growth is reflected in her continuous learning. She pursued further education with the Sustainability Strategies and Green Economy Program at Singapore Management University in 2023, aligning her career with global sustainability goals.
Al Shamsi’s contributions go beyond technical expertise; she’s a beacon for women in aviation, a mentor, and a leader whose work is transforming the aviation industry. Her story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the power of dreams. As she continues to soar, she remains committed to breaking barriers and paving the way for the next generation of women in engineering and aviation.
