Anita Ama Asiedu | Ghana | Have Faith, Hope + Hardwork

Owner of BBS Salon | Hairstylist and Fashion Expert

I’m Anita Ama Asiedu, owner of BBS Salon, Hairstylist, and Fashion Expert. “BBS” stands for “Braids and Beauty in Science.” I was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, where I developed a passion for hair braiding at a young age.

From my early school days, I practiced my braiding skills and even grew my younger sister’s hair for practical purposes. My talent grew as I used the three years I spent in JSS to polish my craft. After completing JSS, I began braiding cornrows for money and soon found that our neighbors were coming to me for braids and inviting me to braid at their homes.

Despite being a good student, I knew that my true calling was in hair braiding. Financial constraints prevented me from pursuing further education, but I decided to enroll in a one-year apprenticeship program in hair braiding and hairdressing after JSS. I worked under the guidance of a talented and strict salon owner who taught me the technical skills and business savvy necessary to succeed in the beauty industry. After a few years of working as a stylist, I decided to further my education and enrolled in a diploma course in beauty therapy. This course provided me with a comprehensive understanding of hair and skin care, makeup artistry, and other beauty services.

With my experience and education, I felt confident enough to start my own salon. BBS Salon offers a range of services, including hair braiding, hair extensions, weaving, and makeup artistry. We use only high-quality products to ensure the best results for our clients. As a hairstylist and fashion expert, I am passionate about using my skills and experience to empower my clients. I believe that everyone deserves to feel confident and beautiful, and I strive to create a welcoming and inclusive environment where clients can feel comfortable expressing themselves.

Overall, I am proud of the journey that has brought me to where I am today. As a successful salon owner and beauty professional, I am passionate about using my skills and experience to make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that everyone deserves to feel beautiful and confident, and I am honored to be able to help my clients achieve that every day.

What were the biggest initial hurdles you faced and how did you overcome them?

I have successfully opened a small salon and have had the privilege of training several apprentices. However, I am faced with the challenge of limited space which has hindered my ability to fully execute all that I aspire to accomplish. My passion lies in mentoring and imparting my skills to younger girls through training, and while I have been able to do this in my own small way during my journey over the years, I believe that with adequate support, I could do much more.

What advice do you have for young people locally and internationally who are just starting out in their careers or pursuing their passions?

I would advise every young person to have faith and hope in their passions and to actively develop them. Perseverance is key when faced with challenges, and it is important to remain consistent even on difficult days because things eventually get better. Pursuing one's passion can lead to a sense of peace and stability, like being beside still waters, and can provide multiple opportunities and uses, like a palm tree. Through dedication and determination, one can become firmly established and flourish.
