Chief Executive Officer at BGC Ottawa | Program Advisory Chair - Volunteering | Speaker
Adam Joiner’s story is a remarkable testament to resilience, personal growth, and leadership. From a quiet boy who hesitated at the door of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa (BGCO), Adam has risen to become the CEO of the very organization that shaped his youth. At the age of nine, Adam found himself in a new town, often watching other children visit the nearby clubhouse from his high-rise apartment. Though initially too shy to join them, his mother encouraged him to explore. After many hesitant attempts, Adam finally joined a ball hockey game at the club, marking the beginning of a deep connection with the organization. The clubhouse became his second home, offering a sense of belonging and sparking a passion that would guide his life. Today, as CEO of BGC Ottawa, Adam leads a $6 million annual budget and 180 employees, ensuring that thousands of kids across the city have access to the same supportive environment that changed his life. His vision for the club remains deeply personal: "At the end of the day, the most important thing we’re teaching kids is that they can be anything they want to be," Adam says. Before taking on the CEO role in May 2020, Adam spent over 18 years with BGC Ottawa, steadily rising through the ranks. He started as a Senior Manager in 2006, overseeing the Central/West Region, which included three in-city program locations, two specialized programs, and Camp Smitty. His dedication to youth development and leadership was evident throughout his career, eventually leading him to the Director of Programs position in 2015, where he spent almost five years shaping the organization's core activities before his appointment as CEO.
In addition to his work at BGC Ottawa, Adam also held roles as a Personal Support Worker for Innovative Community Support Services from 2004 to 2010, providing care for adults with disabilities. He also served as the before-and-after care supervisor and camp director at Ray Friel Recreation Complex from 2003 to 2006. Adam's dedication to community service extends beyond his professional work. Since 2019, he has served as the Program Advisory Chair at Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology, his alma mater, where he earned a diploma in Social Service Work. Through this role, he continues to mentor and shape the next generation of social service workers.
Adam Joiner’s journey from shy observer to community leader illustrates the profound impact that youth services can have, not just in shaping futures, but in creating lifelong bonds to the community.
